Arcane Legends features an open map that players can either walk across or teleport across. We first saw this in Pocket Legends, a system that set the first title firmly in the MMORPG camp. These are complete worlds now, ones that we can freely explore and move across. Arcane Legends also features a very robust pet system. We've seen pets in Pocket Legends and Star Legends, but nothing like this.
The game also has some cool features such as being able to change how your character looks. Everyone is wearing something different. Some are higher levels with better items in hand, which tends to be the case in most MMO’s. Included in this game are pet’s that you can buy or find. These pets help you during a quest by giving your character stat boosts or even attacking enemies for you. Be sure to make the pet happy! Other features include being able to randomly join other players when visiting new areas, create a clan, and complete many daily tasks. I’ve put in a lot of time into this game and enjoyed it.
In addition to your basic attack and your skills, you can also have your companion attack for additional support. As you level up, your skills can be upgraded to include various perks and bonuses, which will help you along your way. Most games force you to level up a skill tree in progressive order, but here you actually get to pick what upgrades in whatever order you pick, which adds more customization to your character. You also get to feed your upgrade points into your strength, dexterity and intelligence stats, which will further help your character’s base stats. Players choose one of three classes (warrior, sorcerer, or rogue), and pick from a handful of different faces and hairstyles. You also get a pet which acts as back-up in combat and also runs around to pick up loot for you once combat has died down. There's a whole bunch of collectible pets to find throughout gameplay, each with their own special abilities and leveling scheme.
Another strength is that you can do a lot with the three basic classes. The game statistics are simple: Warriors rely on strength, rogues love dexterity, and sorcerers depend on intelligence. However, each class can be customized with eight active and seven passive skills. The skills cover the usual range of sorcerous fireballs and roguish knife attacks, but there’s enough variation that even when you’re adventuring with a character of the same class, you’re likely to be using different abilities.
While I’m not ready to say that I’ve found the perfect mobile game yet, I did find myself having a lot of fun in Arcane Legends. The world, while fairly simple, is colourful and fun, and the combat was action packed if simple. If I had a long commute on public transit, I could see myself spending many hours on my phone. As someone who drives to work every day though, I could not find enough in the game to pull me away from the more full featured games that I can play on my PC.
